There are no rules in witchcraft; it’s all about creativity, intuition and magic (obviously). If you’re a new witch and want some direction on where to start, discovering what type of witch you are and which magical archetype you most naturally embody will help you begin your journey.
Here’s a guide to the 7 main types of witches, although there are plenty more types out there. Let your intuition nudge you as to which one feels most alive in you now – because they can certainly change over time too!
Am I only one type of witch?
You may be drawn to one type of witchcraft specifically, but it’s more likely that you’ll practice a mixture of different ones, drawing upon their tools and rituals as you feel aligned with them. This is known as an eclectic witch, which is what I personally resonate with. That’s the best part about being a witch: you get to be creative, experiment and let your curious inner child lead you to whatever feels magical.
But if you’re only just discovering your inner witch, then choosing one or two types can be a really helpful place to start. Sometimes the never-ending vortex of witchcraft tools, rituals and spells can feel overwhelming, especially when your inner perfectionist rears her head, wanting to get it “right.”
Choosing 1-2 types of witchcraft you feel strongly drawn towards will help you define which tools to invest in first for your rituals and which elements you want to work with.
Your power is also strongest when you’re using the elements that you personally are most drawn to.
Baby steps, witches, because this is a lifelong journey that you get to continuously play and experiment with.
Let’s discover what type of witch you are.

Green Witch
Plants, herbs and Fae.
You’re naturally drawn to all things with earth energy, and the magic you practice feels grounded, practical and health-focused (compared to other more spiritual or elusive forms of witchcraft).
Some Green Witches love growing things with their hands (after all, plants growing from seeds is pretty magical), and some love creating healing potions and tinctures through herbs, flower essences or essential oils. Naturopaths, herbalists and medicine women definitely fall into this category! You may also feel a connection to earth spirits, woodland creatures, animal spirits or the Fae.
The rituals of Green Witches draw in the four elements (air, fire, water and earth) and focus on balance, harmony and reciprocation between the elements.
How you draw power: standing barefoot on the earth.
Where to start: buy some indoor plants to nurture or start a veggie/herb patch if you’ve got room (basil, rosemary and lavender are go-tos, and you’ll later use these herbs in spells). Invest in a few essential oils (here are my most-used favourites). And here’s an Animal Spirit deck you’d love.

Kitchen Witch
Recipe spells, home rituals, gardening.
You feel most creative and magical in the kitchen, and love the feeling of having a cosy ‘hearth’ in your home. You’re probably already very nurturing to your loved ones, with cooking as your love language!
Kitchen Witches use herbs, spices and their intention to infuse food and potions with healing properties and manifestation wishes. Your magic is created by the process of cooking and baking, and the energy you pour into your creations. Tea magick is also up your alley!
While Green Witches tend to use herbs in ritual by annointing candles or sprinkling them on altars, for Kitchen Witches the food or dish is your altar – and you practice your magic by creating and then potentially ingesting that.
How you draw power: focusing your intention the symbolism and health benefits of the herbs and spices as you add them to foods.
Where to start: create some space in a corner of your kitchen for your herb & spice apothecary (maybe with some cute matching glass jars).

Divination Witch
Tarot, scrying, pendulums.
Your intuition and connection to the Universe are your biggest powers. You have a deep sense of faith that the divine will always provide you with the answers; all you have to do is listen! Some of your favourite things to do are looking for signs and finding meaning in what occurs around you.
Divination Witches all use tools to amplify their intuition in different ways: Tarot cards or Oracle cards, runes, scrying, reading tea leaves or smoke patterns or consulting a swinging pendulum. Their spells focus on connecting with Spirit to receive wisdom.
How you draw power: asking Spirit/the Divine to send you messages
Where to start: choose an oracle deck that resonates with you (this Animal Spirit and Goddess decks are my favourite) and pull a card each morning, asking what do I need to know today?

Cosmic Witch
Astrology, starseeds, planets.
Cosmic Witches feel a deep connection to the sky and the rhythms of the celestial bodies and planets. You’re naturally curious about astrology or feel that your soul is incarnated from a different starseed.
Your spells would integrate practices from your home planet or starseed (like Sirius), or consult the day’s natal chart before performing specific rituals. You use the transits of the planets to strengthen your craft and set intentions specific to the energy of each celestial body.
Big cosmic events, such as Eclipse season and Retrograde periods, affect you more than most and are times when you should be focusing on your practices.
How you draw power: harnessing the energy of specific planets in your spellcraft.
Where to start: a personalised Astrology Chart reading to understand what your biggest planetary influenecs are and how to best harness your own personal magick.

Lunar Witch
Emotional, moon phases, divine feminine.
You’re a deeply emotional being and feel very in tune with the Moon, which impacts you more than others. Lunar Witches craft their practices around the lunar cycle, their emotions and their subconscious. You probably also have a few strong water placements in your astrological chart to enhance this lunar power (find out if you do).
Since you draw power from the moon, and also are more influenced by her ebbs and flows than others (like the tides), routinely noticing what phase the moon is in (new moon, waxing, full moon, waning) and also its astrological sign will be important for your spellwork. Charging your tools in the moon or making moon water are the best ways to prepare for rituals.
Living in sync with the lunar cycle is also crucial to help you come back to emotional equilibrium, as your inner world sometimes feels like a rollercoaster! A challenge for you, more than other types of witches, is embracing those ebbs and flows and realising that your power stems from those emotions.
Since the Moon represents the feminine, Lunar Witches also practice divine feminine rituals that help them connect to their feminine energy, intuition and emotions. Here are my favourite ways to connect deeper to your divine feminine.
How you draw power: accepting your emotional waves without judgment
Where to start: learn about what each moon phase means and the best rituals to perform on each.

Sea Witch
Lunar energy, bodies of water, sirens.
You have a strong connection to the sea and ocean; similar to the Lunar Witch, you’re deeply emotional and are influenced by the changing tides and lunar phases. However, where Lunar Witches represent feminine energy, Sea Witches are all about dark feminine energy. They are comfortable in the darkest depths of the ocean, after all.
You’re drawn to the Siren archetype, which is all about power, mystery, intrigue, magnetism and the underworld. Sirens are alluring and hypnotic, associated with sensuality – so your witchcraft is likely to include sensuality practices. Other ocean spirits or sea folklore may also play a role in your spells.
Your spells are strongest around bodies of water, on the beach or with your feet submerged in the waves. Cleansing your divine tools and crystals in the ocean will increase the power of your craft. Place bottles of sand, shells, driftwood or even sea water on your altar, and use these items in your magic.
You probably have some strong water placements in your astrology chart, too, like the Lunar Witches – especially Scorpio placements.
How you draw power: with your feet submerged in ocean waves
Where to start: learn how to incorporate dark feminine rituals, including sacred rage practices and sensuality practices.

Eclectic Witch
Experimental, modern, self-directed.
You’re drawn to a little bit of everything! You pull from many different practices in your witchcraft: traditional Wiccan ceremonies, Greek gods and goddesses, forest spirits, lunar phase rituals and divination through oracle cards.
Your practice can either be secular or worship a higher being. Many Eclectic witches believe in their own personal mix of deities, from the Catholic Saints to the Egyptian goddeses.
While other witches enjoy have a focus or set of rules to work with, you enjoy making your own rules and experimenting with what draws your curiosity.
